It's too bad that most SMO sites are controlled by the top diggers/stumblers, etc.

The one thing I like about social media sites is the reliance on your peers to judge what is useful content and what isn't. There is still a fair amount of "cheating" happening with search engine optimization, however social media sites make it nearly impossible for one individual to artificially boost the exposure of a page right to the top.

It seems to me that the SEO's who want to have a (relevant) job in two years need to be investing their time into SMO immediately.

Interesting post.

I've long believed that social networking is becoming a far more important cog in the overall SEO/SEM of a website.

The problem has always been choosing which ones are the more prevalent, and therefore beneficial to your site.

Perhaps something that needs looking at more in-depth is the strength and weaknesses of each particular social network or social media site.

After all, just as the relevancy of inbound links help build a site's authority, so the relevancy and strength of the right social media site will be just as important.
